Wearing a bridesmaid dress as your wedding gown?

October 26th, 2009

I’m noticing the style of dress I want is a lot like many bridesmaid dresses, for a fraction of the price!

From DavidsBridal, the wedding gown I love is: Style T9309
The bridesmaid dress there that looks similar is Style 81123

Has anyone found a bridesmaid dress that’s gorgeous, ordered it in white, and worn that as your wedding gown?

And does anyone know of a bridesmaid dress that looks like my gown I want but from a different store?

Since you don’t mind if you have a train then sure go for the bridesmaid dress. It’s cheaper and no one is going to know the difference! It’s beautiful by the way.

You can also look at informal wedding dresses and prom dresses too.

And here are some more:

I think that is a really smart thing to do! Why spend hundreds more just because its a wedding gown. No one but you would know the difference anyway. I have seen similar dresses at local bridal stores in my area. You may want to check out prom dresses too.

If you love the dress, that is what matters and a lot of BM dresses are meant to reflect the style of the bride’s dress.

Check out JCrew. They have a ton of bridesmaids dresses that come in white/off white and are full length and can be worn as a wedding gown.

I had my heart set on an Alfred Angelo bridesmaid gown in ivory. I turned to bridesmaids dresses for the same reasons you are describing! They were simple, elegant and a whole lot easier on my checkbook!
Our wedding planning started off with a garden B&B, where the dress would have been lovely.
Unfortunately our guest list exploded once the parents were involved and I needed a more formal gown for our church wedding.
But if I could do it all over again, I’d go back to that simple Alfred Angelo bridesmaids gown!

    Oh! They still make it:

At first I didn’t understand – So what you’re saying is, the BM dress is $150, why buy the bridal gown for $400? The bow is different on the BM dress and it doesn’t appear to come in white – but I think I like the fabric better on the BM dress.

If I were to find one close enough, I would certainly buy it in white – if it came that way – knowing Davids Bridal, though, they’re on to you and it doesn’t come in white.

I didn’t because I was able to find an informal wedding gown that was just what I wanted.
But I came REAL close to ordering this one in white: http://www.jasminebridal.com/J_2_1_1_1.aspx?sqno=JPN2008092510015&j_style_no=STYL20080821001&j_line_no=LINE20080821003&j_line_season=B

Here is a similar one to what you like, but the closest color to white is cream:

I also like this one, which would let you put a pop of color to your dress:

My friend of mine bought that wedding gown, and another friend of mine’s sister had that bridesmaid dress in her wedding. They do look similar, but David’s Bridal doesn’t sell that dress in white for bridesmaids, as I’m sure you already know. I like your idea of ordering your dress as a bridesmaid dress…it will be a lot cheaper, and just as elegant if that is what you are looking for.

You are right, they totally look very alike! I would say to save a few bucks, get the bridesmaid version in white. No one has to know, and with your special jewlery and veil, you will NOT look like a bridesmaid. Make sure your bridesmaid dresses are a very different style from you. Maybe cut at the knees or something.

Wow! That’s smart, definitely get the bridesmaid’s dress! I’d say it’s even better! Haha

If you find a bridesmaid dress that you love for your wedding dress than just make sure that when you pick out the dresses for your bridesmaids that they are alot more "casual" or "simpler" than your dress. That way you will be the shining star. You don’t want your dress to blend in with your bridesmaids dresses.
